Humberto

Early Thursday morning, September 12, 2007, High Island, Texas experienced an almost direct hit from Hurricane Humberto. There was alot of storm damage in the community and power was out for several days. Although I missed it, First Baptist Church was able to hold regular Sunday Worship services. High Island received alot of coverage in the media due to it being the closest point of landfall for Humberto. And High Island recevied alot of help from several service organizations.

Church Directory Pictures to be taken Aug 15

We have met with an Olan Mills representative and we have started setting up appointments for the photographer.

The date will be August 15, 2007. Photos will be taken from 3:00pm to 9:30pm with pictures being taken about once every ten minutes. Contact me for a time slot.

New Adults Sunday School Class

We have started a new Sunday School class for adults. Bro. David will be teaching the class. All adults are welcome. He plans to use the "Masterworks" curriculum.

The origiinal Adults class will still be taught by Ms. Margie

What's happening............

Bro. David has been serving with us for a whole month now. He's doing a great job. We are so glad that he is with us.

We have changed the layout of our Sunday morning service a little. Our song service has changed up a little to accommodate some new things. We have a meet & greet session with a lot of handshaking and hugging. Also, before the young ones are taken to the nursery, Bro. David brings the children to the front and talks to them, telling them a story, and they get candy when he's done.

On Sunday night, Bro. David encourages everyone to memorize a bible verse. He is even giving out candy bars to everyone who comes forward and gives their best shot.

The youth of our church are getting ready to go to youth camp. They have raised quite a few dollars to cover their expenses. We are hoping that they are able to raise enough.

Roger George has started a Wednesday night youth bible study. We had seventeen youth last Wednesday (May 23).

So Long and Thanks For Being One of Us

Dr. Ralph Thompson came to us last year. We needed guidance. We needed hope. We needed love. All these things he gave us, and more.

Bro. Ralph came to us to be our interim pastor. We all knew he would be leaving us at some point. And now is that time.

I think we all have learned alot from him. I know we have all grown to trust him and to love him. We all hate to see him leaving, but a new chapter is about to start for us.

While he has been with us, he has shared our happiness, sorrow, fear and pain. And we have shared his. We will miss him much.

This Sunday we will be honoring Bro. Ralph for all that he has done for us. And to say goodbye. Everyone is invited.

Condolences

We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the students and faculty whose lives were lost on April 16th, 2007 at the Virginia Tech University. Our hearts and our prayers go out to each and every one of you.

Easter Service

Even though it was a short, we had a good visit with our new pastor, David Pursley, when he came down for Easter Sunday. The day itself didn't start all that great with the bad weather, but it did clear out after a few hours.

Breakfast was served just prior to Sunday School. Several members and a few visitors were there to enjoy the continental style meal. And, it was great to see the attendance in Sunday School so high.

The main worship service went well with great songs and great voices. Following the music portion of the service Pastor Pursley brought all the kids to the front and told them a story. Afterwards, he also gave them candy. Pastor Pursley gave a wonderful sermon on the crucifixion which drew every one's attention throughout. At the end of the service, the pastor's oldest daughter came forward to move her letter of church membership to our church.

All in all it was a great day. We all got another chance to meet the rest of Pastor Pursley's family, getting to know them better, growing closer, and building a deeper relationship.

I know everyone in the congregation is looking forward, with great expectations, to the month of May when Pastor Pursley is able to make the move to High Island.

A lot of stuff has changed on the website over the last few weeks. I'm still looking for more stuff that can be added.

The main reason for this blog is to test its ease to use. I had intended on setting this up for pastor comments. Guess we'll see.
